What is Under the Banner of Heaven about?
Under the Banner of Heaven is based on a 2003 book of the same name by John Krakauer, a non-fiction retelling of the 1984 double murder of Brenda and her infant daughter, Erica.
Brenda was murdered by her brothers-in-law, Dan and Ron Lafferty, who disapproved of her, but claimed the crime was religiously motivated.
The brothers were members of the School of the Prophets, a denomination of fundamentalist Mormon faith. Ron claimed that God sent him revelations of about Brenda, which allegedly called for the removal of Brenda and Erica.
While this aspect of the plot is based on true events, Andrew Garfield’s character seems to be a fictional addition to the story.
While the trailer sets the story up to be a bit of a murder mystery, the added element of faith gives the well-known story an extra edge.
