This is definitely Zendaya Coleman’s year.
A Spiderman movie, a lucrative deal with one of the biggest beauty brands in the world and now, a collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger.
Following in the footsteps of model Gigi Hadid who also worked with the all-American brand to release four capsule collections, fellow Tommy Hilfiger brand ambassador Zendaya is the latest celebrity to create a line with the designer.
While Gigi’s designs tapped into the 'sporty-fashion' trend, Zendaya’s collection is more '70s inspired.
On Saturday, she presented her #TOMMYNOW collection in Paris which was to “celebrate self-expression, individuality and empowerment” and the 22-year-old expresses how surprised she was when she got the call from Tommy himself, "I didn't really believe it [was him] at first. Tommy Hilfiger on the phone? And he said, 'Look, if you do a show with me, you can have whatever you want and do whatever you want. Go nuts. If you have a vision, tell me, and we'll execute it together.'"
In keeping with the topical issue of inclusivity and diversity in media and fashion, Zendaya's vision was to cast 59 black models for her show to thank them for “their influence in fashion, Hollywood and beyond.”
She says, "I want to make a show inspired by the women who made it possible for me to be in the position where I am now. Honestly, I just wanted to say “thank you” to them through this show. I said to Tommy, 'If we do a show, this is what it needs to be about.' And Tommy said, 'Great. Go for it.' And he actually meant it. I mean, look."
Amongst those models was one of the most iconic black artists of all time, Grace Jones (who apparently received the most screams and gasps when she closed the show). Coleman posted the special moment on her Instagram captioned, "....speechless."
"We said, 'we want Grace Jones, she represents so much beauty and power and she needs to be here,'" Zendaya explains. "And somehow, Tommy's team made it happen."
