The shocking truth behind new thriller series ‘All Her Fault’

Sarah Snook and Dakota Fanning's latest series has everyone talking.

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. You arrive to collect your child only to discover they’re not there.

The new limited series All Her Fault reimagines that scenario to horrifying effect.

Starring Sarah Snook, Dakota Fanning and Jake Lacy, the show feels ripped directly from the headlines: a vanished child, a picture-perfect neighbourhood imploding under suspicion, and secrets unraveling in slow, stomach-turning reveals.

And in the age where so many true stories are mined for content — The Dropout, Baby Reindeer, and Dahmer to name just a few — it’s often assumed series like All Her Fault are based on real life stories.

Here, we delve into the story behind the series to separate fact from fiction.

Is All Her Fault based on a true story?

No. All Her Fault is not based on a true crime case.

Instead, the show is adapted from the bestselling novel by Irish author Andrea Mara, and while the plot is fictional, it is rooted in one very real moment of panic from the author’s own life.

According to an interview with People, Mara once went to collect her daughter from a playdate and accidentally arrived at the wrong house, triggering a brief but intense fear spiral.

That fleeting moment of “something is wrong” became the seed for the book. “What if that moment of fear didn’t end?” she explained.

Though Mara is clear: no kidnapping happened, and the real story ended quickly and harmlessly.

While the show’s setup mirrors Mara’s flash-panic moment, the similarities end there. In the series (and the book), the situation detonates into a missing child, a widening circle of suspects, buried secrets among neighbours, conspiracies, betrayals and increasingly dark revelations.

The show leans hard into psychological twists and intense plot turns, pushing the story into full thriller territory.
