It’s one of those TV shows where you still remember the really catchy theme song, and probably still have the soundtrack on CD somewhere in your house.
Ally McBeal turns 20 years old this year, and to celebrate we’ve done some digging to find out what the stars of the hit 90’s TV show are up to these days.
Ally McBeal (played by Calista Flockhart)
It was the role that made Calista Flockhart a big name in showbiz.
After Ally McBeal was cancelled during season five, Flockhart appeared in the family drama Brothers And Sisters as Kitty Walker, alongside Rob Lowe.
Flockhart currently stars in the TV series of Supergirl, as media magnate Cat Grant.
Billy Thomas (played by Gil Bellows)
It was one of the most shocking departures in TV at the time, when Billy collapsed during a court trial, only after being diagnosed with a brain tumour a couple of episodes earlier.
Since his role on Ally McBeal, Bellows has had some minor roles in TV shows like Smallville, Eyewitness and Bones.
Richard Fish (played by Greg Germann)
Law firm boss Richard Fish was known for his ‘fishisms’ and made the catchphrase ‘bygones’ mainstream.
Also remembered for his love of older women and their wattle, ‘the loose skin on the neck’.
Since the show, Germann has appeared in NCIS, Once Upon A Time, Law And Oder: Special Victims Unit, Limitless as well as some upcoming films to be released later this year.
Ling Woo (played by Lucy Liu)
Only meant as a temporary role in the show, Liu’s character quickly became popular with the audience.
In 2000, she scored her first major starring role in the blockbuster Charlie’s Angels with Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz.
During 2001, you may have spotted her in Sex & The City when she played herself as a new client for Samantha Jones’ PR agency, and returned to her legal roots as a lawyer in Ugly Betty.
In 2003, Liu played O-Ren Ishii in Quentin Tarentino’s cult classic Kill Bill.
Currently, she stars in the US TV series Elementary.
Elaine Vassal (played by Jane Krakowski)
Inventor of the ‘face bra’, Ally’s assistant Elaine Vassal was quite the gossip and always had the lowdown on what was happening in the firm.
Krakowski went on to appear in stage musicals, where she won an Oliver award, as well as TV appearances in 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
She also had a couple of film roles in Alfie and The Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas, where she played Betty Rubble.
John Cage (played by Peter MacNicol)
Known for having a remote control to flush the toilet (germs, you know) and singing to his pet frog.
After McBeal, he starred in Chicago Hope, 24 and Grey’s Anatomy as well as being a character voice in American Dad!
Nelle Porter (played by Portia de Rossi)
She was the ‘ice queen’ Nelle Porter, and was a regular cast member on the show until its finale.
de Rossi also appeared in Arrested Development, Nip/Tuck and played Elizabeth North in Scandal – however was killed off during season six.
The Australian star is also married to Ellen DeGeneres, and loves riding horses.
Georgia Thomas (played by Courtney Thorne-Smith)
Already known for her role in Melrose Place, Thorne-Smith originally auditioned for the role of Ally McBeal.
After the show ended, she starred in sitcoms According To Jim and Two And A Half Men.
She now writes for a living, and released a novel in 2007 called ‘Outside’.
Renee Raddick (played by Lisa Nicole Carson)
Renee was Ally’s bestie and flat mate but weirdly disappeared from the fifth season of the show.
Reports at the time suggested that she was removed from the show because of her erratic behaviour, however, popped up again on the show’s finale.
Carson took a break from acting after struggling with bipolar disorder.
Vonda Shepard
During the show’s five years, Shepard released four albums, one that included the theme song ‘Searchin’ My Soul’.
She also worked with some big names in the music industry including Sting, Jon Bon Jovi, Chubby Checker, Al Green, Gladys Knight and Barry Manilow.
Shepard is currently on tour.
