Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will continue to follow the temporary family decision plan recommended by the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services as its investigation continues.
The investigation was launched after Pitt allegedly got “verbally abusive” and “physical” with one of his children with Jolie on the couple’s private plane on Sept. 14. Jolie filed for divorce five days later.
The former couple agreed to a voluntary parenting plan including counseling and visitation, which was scheduled through Oct. 20. Multiple sources now tell PEOPLE that both the DCFS investigation and temporary plan will be continued.
“They’re looking for a history or pattern of behavior,” a legal source with knowledge of the situation tells PEOPLE. With this continuation, says source, “They are looking at the original inciting incident and anything surrounding that, and looking at any relevant history.”
Another source with legal knowledge of the situation tells PEOPLE, “Things remain in a holding pattern at this point and are ideally nearing a conclusion. This investigation has always been and continues to be open-ended.”
The second source notes that extending investigations is not unusual for the DCFS. “People have erroneously made the assumption that he original Oct. 20th date of the agreement between the two parties was also in some way a deadline for DCFS, and that is simply not the case,” explains the source.
“The parties reached an initial agreement and standard operating procedure is that a DCFS investigation is open-ended; DCFS is under no deadline and there is no delay here, simply a continuation of an ongoing process,” the source adds.
Both Jolie, 41, and Pitt, 52, will continue to attend individual counseling, as well as family counseling with their children.
Pitt has met with several of his children at least twice, and according to the original plan, a therapist was present during the actor’s first meeting with his kids.
Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in a Los Angeles court Sept. 19, stating that she separated from the Allied star on Sept. 15 – just one day after the couple and son Maddox, 15, were involved in an alleged altercation aboard their private plane.
The DCFS launched the investigation after the incident was reported anonymously.
