Broods deliver one of 2019’s best albums

And the year is only one month old!
Sony Music

New Zealand duo Broods were among the top 20 of this year’s Triple J Hottest 100 with recent single “Peach” – just the latest in a long line of superb tracks dating back to their 2014 debut. Now, they’ve released their best album yet, Don’t Feed the Pop Monster.

There’s an understated quality to the third album from siblings Georgia and Caleb Nott. While Pop Monster contains another batch of hooky electronic tunes, there’s a greater gentleness and subtlety to songs like “Falling Apart” than generally heard from the pair – although they can still bang, as “Peach” attests.
This near-perfect album features something else new: a lead vocal from Caleb on “Too Proud”. Want more good news: the pair have also just announced an Australian tour for May, with tickets onsale now. (Out Fri., Feb. 1) 4.5 stars
