Inside Beyoncé and Jay Z’s family life

Get to know the famous family.

She may have taken home every major award in music, but above her endless accolades, Beyoncé holds her title as mother most dear.

“Parenting constantly teaches you about yourself. It takes a lot of prayer and patience. I love it. It’s grounding and fulfilling,” the singer told GQ in September 2024.

While her first pregnancy announcement may have taken the main stage at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, the 43-year-old has kept her family life largely out of the public eye.

“One thing I’ve worked extremely hard on is making sure my kids can have as much normalcy and privacy as possible, ensuring my personal life isn’t turned into a brand. It’s very easy for celebrities to turn our lives into performance art. I have made an extreme effort to stay true to my boundaries and protect myself and my family,”

As the family continue to mark their next major milestones, we take a closer look at Beyoncé and Jay Z’s family life.

Born on January 7, 2012, Blue Ivy Carter is the eldest of Beyoncé and Jay Z’s three children.

Announcing her first pregnancy during her performance of Love On Top at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, Beyoncé cradled her growing baby bump on stage, sparking a countdown among the Beyhive for the arrival of her first child.

After welcoming their daughter, fans took to social media to discuss the inspiration behind Blue Ivy’s name, with many seeking to uncover the meaning behind her unique moniker. Following many weeks of digging, the Beyhive deduced that her name drew its inspiration from two of the couple’s most stand-out albums, with ‘Blue’ being drawn from Jay Z’s The Blueprint and ‘Ivy’ representing Beyoncé’s lucky number and 2011 album title, IV.

Following in her parent’s musical footsteps, Blue featured on Jay Z’s 2012 single Glory and Beyoncé’s 2020 track Brown Skin Girl – earning a then-nine-year-old Blue her first Grammy Award and making her the second youngest winner in Grammy history.

While most of her early childhood was spent out of the spotlight, Blue took to the stage alongside her mother during her 2023/24 Renaissance World Tour for her performance of My Power and Black Parade.

“She’s a natural, but I did not want Blue onstage. Blue wanted it for herself. She took it seriously and she earned it and, most importantly, she had fun! We all watched her grow more and more every night before our eyes,” Beyoncé told GQ.

As well as performing in front of hundreds of thousands of fans, Blue has also dipped her toe into the acting world, lending her voice to Princess Kiara in Mufasa: The Lion King.

Sir & Rumi Carter, 7

Beyoncé welcomed her twins, daughter Rumi and son Sir, on June 13, 2007.

When Beyoncé announced her second pregnancy in February 2017, she just about broke the internet, with the photo quickly becoming the most-liked Instagram photo ever at that time.

While the announcement of their birth may have made headlines, Beyoncé and Jay Z have kept information surrounding their two youngest children out of the spotlight, however, the couple’s family have shared a few heartwarming details about the Carter twins.

Beyoncé’s mother Tina told US Weekly in 2019 that the growing twins have vastly different personalities. She revealed that Rumi “is really just going to rule the world,” while Sir “is kind of laid back and chill.”

In May 2024, Tina shared another update on Rumi and Sir’s blossoming personalities, telling E! News, “[Rumi is] an amazing artist. Painter and creator, so I mean, how could they be anything else growing up in that environment? That’s all we talk about is creativity and fashion and the whole thing.”

“Sir is very quiet and is very, very smart and does all of the numbers stuff, so he’s not into the fashion stuff as much,” she continued.
