In 2012, the editor of People, Julie Jordan, shared some insight into how the publication chose its winners during an interview with USA Today.
The editor explained that the general public plays a large role in the decision, with People taking note of reactions and comments on celebrity coverage throughout the year.
Julie also revealed that they ask female celebrities who their vote would be and “consult focus groups, which inform discussions among higher-ups in the magazine.” Editorial staff is also asked to give their input.
Dan Wakeford, the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine between 2019 and 2022 also revealed that good looks are not the only judging criteria, using the example of Michael B. Jordan who won the title in 2020 and whose activism in the Black Lives Matter movement played a large role in him being chosen.
