Three years later, she released her best-selling, critically acclaimed memoir, in which she revealed she had been sexually abused in her youth.

So: exactly what does the politically minded singer and Tony-winning writer behind the hit musical Kinky Boots think of the upcoming US election?

“It’s the most shocking we’ve ever had,” Lauper tells WHO during a recent visit to Melbourne to kick off the Australian tour of Kinky Boots. “I think the season is way too long.

“And I think that you should have to qualify to be the president. You can’t just, you know, have money. You have to have a plan and an education.”

Lauper sums up this year’s race with one succinct word: “Awful. But I don’t want to spend time talking about that.

“I’d rather talk about Kinky Boots. Because that makes people happy. And it makes me happy!” She laughs. “And then, I will feel better.”
