10 Of The Funniest Female Stand Up Comedians

These women were all at the front of the queue when the comedy genes were handed out

Laughter is the best medicine and one thing can be said about female stand up comedians, they help give a voice to women’s issues that would be otherwise left unmentioned.

Here’s a list of some of the funniest women on the planet.

#10 Aisling Bea

Aisling (pronounced Ash-ling), is a Irish female comedian from Kildare who is open about “not being arsed” to call back her aunties, clean the bottom of the garbage bin or go running.

“I”d rather just lay on the couch and wither away.”

#9 Judith Lucy

There are many Australian female comedians in this list and Judith Lucy is up there with the best. Her dry and self-deprecating humour offers a refreshing take on what it’s like to be a woman in her 50s who’s still dating.

“My last boyfriend said I’d inspired him to change his underpants every day. Rather than every three days. Yeah, be jealous.”

#8 Jen Kirkman

American comedy woman Jen Kirkman admits she’s bragged about turning 40 and not having wrinkles. But her bragging backfired when she said she woke up the day before her 40th birthday with two grey pubes.

“The elves that used to paint each of my pubic hairs black have been let go with a nice retirement plan.”

#7 Leslie Jones

She’s 6ft, wears size 12 shoes and “can fight”. Leslie Jones is a female force to be reckoned with. Her bouncy style plays on her size and athletic ability and she’s as funny as all get out.

#6 Geraldine Hickey

Melbournites will know Hickey as one of the Breakfasters on 3RRR. But this Australian comedian is also a long standing Melbourne Comedy Festival and Fringe Fest favourite.

Catch her live show Things Are Going Well at this year’s Melbourne Comedy Festival 27 March – 21 April.

#5 Ali Wong

Thirty-six year old Ali Wong is a successful Asian comedian who pokes fun at everyday life, including being one of only a few female comedians who you will have ever seen pregnant.

A popular Netflix choice, Wong has two comedy shows you can download: Hard Knock Wife and Baby Cobra.

#4 Amy Schumer

Being married and pregnant hasn’t stunted Any Schumer’s humour one bit. In fact, now she has ever more material and situations to poke fun at. All of which you can watch in her new Netflix movie Growing.

One of the funniest women on the planet.

#3 Catherine Tate

Best known in Britain for her TV series The Catherine Tate Show, Tate began her career as a stand-up comic. Last year, she brought her show to the Palais Theatre in Sydney where she recreated some of her character favourites, like Nan.

“What a f***ing liberty!”

#2 Ellen Degeneres

It had been 15 years since Ellen did stand-up but her Netflix movie Relatable proves she’s still top of her game.

“A friend of mine asked me if I’d still be relatable … Just then Batou, my butler stepped into the library.”

#1 Hannah Gadbsy

Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby gets the number one spot, not only because she has a razor-sharp wit, but because she’s been brave enough to expose her personal evolution on the global stage.

Her Netflix hit Nanette is so much more than a comedy show, it’s a snapshot of social history that women and “good men” can learn from.

And for that, she gets the number one title of best female comedian ever.
