If you’ve been doom-scrolling through TikTok like the rest of us, you’ll know all too well that there’s another micro-trend making the rounds; the ‘mob wife’ aesthetic.
Oh yes, the sartorial set on the platform are taking to showcase their faux fur coats, thigh-high boots and voluminous tresses to tap into their inner mob wife – Carmela Soprano style.
While the trend is somewhat controversial – not everyone is impressed with yet another micro-trend taking up real estate in the zeitgeist – others are embracing this new look.
Fueling the fire is undoubtedly the release of Netflix’s newest series, Griselda, starring none other than Sofia Vergara in the titular role.
The series is a fictionalised dramatisation inspired by the life of the savvy and ambitious Griselda Blanco, who created one of the most powerful cartels in history.
Speaking about her specific look in the series in a press kit, Sofia said: “I had an incredible hair and makeup design team that did an amazing job creating this character who was in the world of Miami in the ‘70s and ‘80s.”
“Getting the look correct was very important to me because I needed to disappear. I wanted no one to think of me or my last role as Gloria Pritchett. I wanted to get inside Griselda’s head and really understand her mentality, where she was coming from.”
While a far cry from her Modern Family character Gloria – whom she’s best known for playing on TV – Sofia certainly nailed the ‘mob wife’ trend, without even realising it.
With that said, there are several stand-out looks throughout the series thanks to the efforts of the makeup and hair departments and the costume designers.
Below, we take a look at some of our favourites, as well as Griselda-inspired looks for you to re-create the ‘mob wife’ style yourself, at home.
