Warner Bros. and HBO Max (renamed Max) have long been in talks with Harry Potter author, JK Rowling, and finally struck a deal.
In their press release, the streaming channel wrote, “The series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much-loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years.”
Rowling – who has recently been shunned by many Potter fans for making anti-trans comments – will not join the project as a writer, but as an executive producer.
The author has said she is “looking forward” to working on the adaptation.
“Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series,” she said.
In a recent interview, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe told ComicBook that he supported whatever comes next for the franchise, but doesn’t feel a need to be a part of future projects.
“My understanding is that they’re trying to very much start fresh and I’m sure whoever is making them will want to make their own mark on it and probably not want to have to figure out how to get old Harry to cameo in this somewhere,” Daniel explained. “I’m definitely not seeking it out in any way. But I do wish them, obviously, all the luck in the world and I’m very excited to have that torch passed. But I don’t think it needs me to physically pass it.”
The series is expected to follow the plot of one novel per season, giving a total of sevens seasons.
It will be produced by Warner Bros Television and stream on Max.
CEO of HBO and Max Content, Casey Bloys shared his excitement for the series, saying, “We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way. Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World.”
The Harry Potter novels and films follow the antics of child wizard, Harry Potter, as he discovers his magical identity and works to defeat the dark lord and forces of evil in the wizarding world.
Since the original film adaptations starring Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, there has been an eruption of Harry Potter side projects, from theatre productions, to prequel novels and films, and Harry Potter theme parks.
In recent years, Warner Bros. has produced the Harry Potter 20th anniversary reunion special and the Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses game show series.
