Heading into his ninth season as host of Australian Survivor, Jonathan LaPaglia has seen it all. From the harsh challenges, to the dramatic tribal councils, to the sweet family reunions, he’s been there to witness all of it. Here, the 54-year-old gives WHO the lowdown on the upcoming season…
Have you ever been tempted to give up the hosting gig for a season to go on the show as a contestant? How long do you think you’d last?
No way! Sleeping on a beach looks like it sucks … I prefer a comfy hotel. I don’t think I’d last long. My poor social skills would rear their ugly head and I’d say something stupid to someone that would get me voted off pretty early I think.
Do you think someone from the Titan or Rebel background has a greater chance of success?
No. The skills (and luck) required to navigate this game are so varied, it’s really up for grabs for anyone.

How do you get to spend your free time in Samoa when not filming?
What free time? You must be talking about some other show.
What’s a location that you haven’t filmed in yet but would love to?
Mana Island in Fiji, where the US shoots. It looks so nice!
Which past competitor do you think is the greatest to ever play the game?
For Australian Survivor that would be a toss-up between George [Mladenov] and David [Genat].

What three things do you think are essential qualities to win?
Strong social game, the ability to think five steps ahead and a willingness to take risks.
How do you think the competition has changed during your time?
It’s become more aggressive. When we first started, “mateship” was a thing that definitely hampered gameplay. Now when the players hit the beach, they are ready to do whatever it takes to advance to the next level. Hello, blindside!

What’s different about this season that makes it a must-watch?
It’s a cast of new players no-one has seen before, who are playing at a sophisticated level. It’s gonna be a good season!
Australian Survivor: Titans V Rebels airs Sunday to Tuesday, 7.30pm on 10 and 10play.
