When Lauren Huntriss was paired with shy virgin Matthew Bennett on the sixth season of Married At First Sight, we all had high hopes that these two would walk off into the sunset together. But alas, things turned pretty messy.
WATCH BELOW: Lauren tells Matthew she used to be a lesbian
Though they seemed to be a good match at first, things started to unravel when Matthew asked Lauren to share something about herself that most people find surprising when they learn.
But when Lauren replied that she “used to be a lesbian,” she shocked not just her on-screen husband but viewers around the country as well – especially as many members of the LGBTQI+ community came forward to say that people don’t choose their sexuality.
With her season currently airing in the UK, Lauren, who was 31 during the time of filming, shed a light on why she referred to herself as a lesbian on the show via a recent Instagram Q&A – and she did not hold back.
“Let me tell you what really went down,” Lauren began her response to the camera.
“Firstly to answer your question, no I wasn’t a lesbian. Secondly, I hate titles, I hate labels.”
The former MAFS bride, who was approached to join the cast when she was at an Irish bar, elaborated: “As you guys know, the question was what’s something about you that would shock me. Anything would’ve shocked him but me being me, being the comedian, stirrer that I am – in case you haven’t noticed already – thought ‘What’s something that would really shock this guy?'”
“So I started telling him that I went through a phase in my life, as most girls do when they’re young adults, I started experimenting with girls and I had crushes on girls. My producer was like ‘That’s awesome, this is going to make great TV but we’ll get you to repeat it and just say you used to be a lesbian, keep it short and simple.'”
Lauren then said that she argued “back and forth” with her producer saying that she didn’t feel comfortable calling herself a lesbian but gave into the request out of exhaustion from filming.
The former bride also weighed in on her ex-“husband” Matthew admitting that she felt an unreasonable amount of pressure after she was matched with a 29-year-old virgin.
“It was not fair on me one bit,” she wrote. “But considering the pressure I was put under I think I did a bloody good job!”
Despite appearances of a sweet first encounter, Lauren added that she knew something was off from the moment she and Matthew met at the altar.
“I knew from the moment I actually met him just because I’m so in tune with energy and body language and everything. I knew straight away it wasn’t going to work and I knew there were issues,” she explained, adding that it was “a very socially awkward” encounter.
Lauren also confirmed that she is currently single, explaining: “I am with myself, does that count?”
Whilst Lauren is happily single and living in Newcastle, NSW, her former MAFS partner Matthew is all loved-up with his girlfriend, Annabel who he met at his Sunshine Coast wrestling club.
The couple are living together in Queensland and British ex-pat Annabel shared several loved-up snaps of the couple over the Christmas/New Year period.
“Here’s our generic couple at Christmas picture. Happy Christmas/holiday/Friday!” she captioned her festive post.
