MAFS: Kate says goodbye to Chicken Twisties lover Matt

Sadly, their time has come to an end.

They joined the experiments as intruders but, in reality, Kate Laidlaw and Matt Ridley met months ago filming Married At First Sight Australia. After all this time, it’s finally been revealed that the pair have not made it through the experiment.

They seemed like a perfect match in the eyes of the experts: He just wants someone to love, she just wants to be loved for the first time ever.

“The great thing about Matt is he’s going to work really hard, and really stay there with Kate to make it work,” expert Mel Schilling said of the match.

“I think this experiment will be a huge leap for Kate. But Matt has the ability to be kind, caring, dependable,” added John Aiken.

After their wedding ceremony, Kate claimed she didn’t feel a spark with Matt. Then, Certified Chicken Twisties lover Matt made things even more awkward during their wedding photo-shoot, when he apologised to the bride for his snack-themed breath.

Kate was understandably aghast by his comments; who the hell is loving chicken over cheese flavour? Weirdos, that’s who, and the experts had matched her with one.

“Maybe just take it back a notch,” she told him towards the end of their wedding ceremony, saying she was “not quite there” in terms of affection.

During their second Commitment Ceremony, Kate shut down Matt when he tried to tell the experts things were going well.

“I‘m not here to play pretend relationships, I’m sorry. I’m just here to be honest and tell the truth,” Kate said, with John Aiken calling her “rude.”

She apologised and said she’d try harder to work on the relationship. But has she managed to put their snack differences aside and form a real connection with Matt?

“Kate is an amazing girl, she really is,” Matt tells WHO. “Sure she hasn’t been portrayed that way yet, but there are times when we’ve had great fun, where we’ve opened up to each other and shared our stories. And hopefully you’ll start to see that the relationship blossomed.”

Blossomed he says, blossomed. There was a glimmer of hope that these two might put their differences aside and make it through but, unfortunately, that just didn’t happen.

At the latest Commitment Ceremony, Kate revealed she had wanted to give Matt another chance but changed her mind after he got drunk at the Couple’s Retreat.

“I made stupid decisions at a really crucial time in our relationship, and I stuffed up,” Matt told the experts.

Both couples chose to write “leave” and said a sad farewell to the experiment. And the signs were there all along that they might be heading for a (somewhat amicable) split.

The pair were both following each other on Instagram ahead of their premiere episode – unlike some of the “unhappy” couples. It showed there was at least a glimmer of friendship beneath the surface.

On SportsBet they were also tipped to remain in the experiment longer than Carolina Santos and Dion Giannarelli – but is that really saying much? In the end, they basically went out at the same time.
