I think it’s safe to say we saw Matt Agnew and Chelsie McLeod’s split coming from a mile away after he left her at home and jetted off to Scotland just days after the Bachie finale aired.

While Chelsie focused on showing fans she was still very much in love with the astrophysicist— often telling her Instagram followers she missed him— Matt remained relatively quiet as he spent weeks away from the lucky lady he handed his final red rose.

Now, an insider has claimed his solo trip abroad was, in fact, the “beginning of the end” for the couple, as Chelsie struggled to understand why Matt needed to leave the country so soon after they were officially an item.

“The moment the show ended and they could finally be a proper couple and go out in public together, Matt basically just disappeared,” an insider close to the former couple told Daily Mail Australia.

According to the source, Matt skipped town because he “suddenly lost interest and changed his mind” about wanting to be with Chelsie— who didn’t see their separation coming.

“Things just fizzled out quickly,” the insider added.

The insight comes days after a source claimed Matt was “contractually obliged” to pick Chelsie during the final rose ceremony, hence why they announced their split so soon after the show played out on our screens.

According to the clued-up spy, Matt knew from the get-go that he didn’t intend to choose any of the women vying for his heart, however, a strict clause in his Network 10 contract prevented him from pulling a Honey Badger.

“He wanted to choose no-one, but obviously it was in his contract that he had to choose someone, so producers pushed him to pick Chelsie because she was the safe bet. If it happened two years in a row, the whole franchise would be done,” the spy told the outlet.

“If they announced their split during Angie’s season, it would have put a bad taste in viewers’ mouths and could have impacted the ratings. So, he was made to keep the act up and do the required media rounds with Chelsie until Angie’s season had finished airing.”

While Chelsie is yet to comment on whether these rumours are true, she unexpectedly opened up about the demise of their relationship last week, admitting she’s still heartbroken.

“It’s definitely been rough,” a tearful Chelsie told her Instagram followers during an Instagram Q&A last night. “I do not deal with heartbreak well and yeah, my heart is broken. This sucks.”

As for why Matt decided to call time on their romance just six months after filming wrapped, Chelsie said she plans to keep the details private.

In spite of this, she hinted their love for one another eventually fizzled out, with the transition into the real world taking a toll on their relationship. Yep, exactly what the first source said!

“A lot of you want to know what happened between Matt and I. I am going to respect his privacy and not go into details,” the chemical engineer continued. “It’s a hard situation and it takes two strong people with a strong connection to get through stages from filming to the end.”

With rumours swirling reality star Chels was blindsided by Matt’s decision to end thing so suddenly, she confirmed this was definitely a reality.

When one fan questioned whether the breakup was mutual, instead of answering the inquiry with a video message as she did before, she posted a photo of a young girl’s face— which became a viral meme a few months ago— giving the side-eye and looking confused.

She later revealed she’s never been able to break up with someone, “even if they’re horrible” and the relationship is toxic.
