Fetch. October 3rd. Grool. Wearing pink on Wednesdays…it’s undeniable Mean Girls had some serious impact on pop culture when it was released in 2004.
Starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried, among many others, the film has continued to stay relevant in the years following its release and has maintained a loyal and dedicated fan base, who weren’t quite excited when news broke of another Mean Girls movie.
With flashbacks of the forgotten sequel made in 2011 in mind (yes, there was a sequel. No, we don’t talk about it.) it’s fair die-hard fans were trepidatious about another Mean Girls adjacent film.
But when the first trailer was released, fans breathed a sigh of relief because not only did it look good – it looked great.
“It feels exciting,” creator Tina Fey tells WHO of revisiting the iconic story. “It feels like a big deal to take the Mean Girls musical that has been running on Broadway since 2017 and to bring it to a wider audience.
“It’s amazing to be here now, 20 years on from the first movie. I have lived with these characters for so long now. They are kind of like children to me, that’s how much they and this means to me.”
With so much significance by the return of Mean Girls, here’s everything you need to know about the movie.
Is the Mean Girls movie a musical?
Many fans felt it was unnecessary to remake the original movie – but they clearly didn’t realise the new film is not a remake, it’s actually a film adaption of the Mean Girls Musical which opened on Broadway in April 2018.
Fey adapted the original film into the hit musical and was heavily involved in bringing it back to the screen.
“We really started by going back to the first movie to remind ourselves why it was such a big hit and why the different relationships between the characters worked,” she says.
“That’s when you realise that Mean Girls is about grievances and the mistakes we all make when we’re that age, and maybe this age too! Bringing the story forward, it was really about working out which of those elements from the film and from the Broadway show to keep, and what to change to keep it feeling new, fun, but also meaningful and surprising.”
Who is in the Mean Girls Musical Film?
Not only did Fey produce and write the film but she also stars as Ms. Norbury.
Australia’s very own Angourie Rice is starring as Cady Heron, Sex Lives of College Girls’ Reneé Rapp will be stepping into the iconic role of Regina George (which she has previously played in the Broadway show) and The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Conrad, we mean Christopher Briney will be playing Aaron Samuels. Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) stars as Janice.
The cast also includes Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, Bebe Wood, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, Ashley Park and Tim Meadows.
