When news first broke that Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel It Ends With Us was getting a film adaptation, long-time fans were quick to begin suggesting their cast picks. Since its publication in 2016, the book had earned a legion of dedicated fans – and they had a clear picture in mind of how the movie would pan out.
But, in a tale as old as time, fans of the book were suspicious to say the least, when news first broke that Blake Lively would be taking on the leading role of Lily Bloom. At first, the online backlash was directed towards her and Justin Baldoni’s ages (the film adaption saw the characters aged up by around a decade), but they were also quick to pick apart Blake’s fashion choices when on-set images were first released.
But now, the author herself has spoken out, with Colleen Hoover shitting down the costume critiques in an interview with E! News.
“[I] didn’t take that too seriously,” she told the publication, “because I knew they didn’t know the context of the pictures.”

Explaining that fans were only looking at paparazzi images with no understanding of the scenes that were being filmed she continued; “They weren’t able to be on set and see this movie coming to life…I was honestly excited that everyone was so passionate about it.”
“I loved the energy they brought,” she added. “I love the passion they brought. I love that they cared enough to get angry about it.”
The best-selling author was also quick to point out that she never actually described what Lily Bloom wore in the book, adding, “How do we know what Lily would wear?”

Whilst Blake may wearing slouchy outfits and a lot of patchwork in the movie, she has been wowing fans with her red-carpet choices for the press tour ahead of the film’s release.
The star has been opting for floral-inspired looks as a nod to her character Lily Bloom, a florist. From floral-inspired denim and tights to an archival piece worn by Britney Spears herself, the star has been bringing the flora to the red carpet.
