As demolition loomed over Ramsay Street, Susan and Karl Kennedy practically broke the fourth wall when referencing a “community about an hour out of Sydney ‘that has found a way to keep going!” *cough* Home and Away *cough*.

“I want to stay,” she said. “I want to fight for the street. Other communities have beaten the odds! We could be one of them!”- a message symbolic of their 31-year legacy on the series.

The finale also featured a wave of familiar faces and newer arrivals preparing for the next chapter.

The Varga-Murphys returned, young couples debated moves and fresh starts, Melanie Pearson (Lucinda Cowden) laughed her way through a nostalgic cameo.

Unlike the 2022 finale, which had big-name alumni such as Kylie Minogue (Charlene) and Jason Donovan (Scott), the 2025 finale did not feature major classic returns from the 1980s and 1990s era.

Instead, producers focused on characters from the Amazon era and 2000s/2010s who were more readily available and still closely connected to the current story.

What did the Neighbours stars have to say?

As the episode aired, tributes from former cast and crew poured across social media- honest, heartfelt and full of history.

Alan Fletcher who played Dr Karl Kennedy

Alongside a video message, Alan Fletcher shared a deeply emotional farewell reflecting on his three decades on the show and called it his “home for 31 years” that brought him so much “joy and professional satisfaction.”

He went on to say: “I want to say thank you to the millions of fans right around the world who embraced the show, not just as an entertainment, but also as a part of their lives. Your love and dedication to #neighbours made it a truly iconic and legendary programme that will live on in all of our hearts.”

The end of Damian’s farewell read: “Huge love & kudos to all the Neighbours fam today; the most phenomenal people on and off screen, and the very best of folk.”

Neighbours: A legacy that will live on

The Neighbours finale managed to deliver the impossible: closure without finality. Though the street faced demolition, the show insisted that what mattered most wasn’t the bricks and morter but the community.

The stories may have ended, but the memories, both on screen and behind the scenes, will echo for decades.

As Susan Kennedy (Jackie Woodburne) reminded viewers in one of the show’s final moments, neighbourhoods aren’t places. They’re people. And Ramsay Street will always have a home in our hearts.
