Nicole Richie is opening up about the ups and downs of parenthood — and pregnancy.
But in an exclusive interview for WHO, the mum of two — son Sparrow is 7 and daughter Harlow is 8½ — she shares a tidbit of advice she’d give to someone who’s about to become a mum for the first time.
“I would say, ‘Don’t let anyone touch your stomach,’ ” says the fashion designer and former The Simple Life star, 34, whose husband is Good Charlotte‘s Joel Madden.
” ‘Don’t let everyone think they have the right to just touch you,’ ” she adds. “Who wants that? Nobody.”
Something else she’d likely tell a pregnant woman? Don’t listen to the pressures of other parents.
“There’s not one way to raise children,” she says. “There’s not one way to be a mother. It really depends on your house and your lifestyle.”
Though Richie is confident about what advice she’d give to a mother about to welcome her first child and supportive of different parenting techniques, there are some things she admits she wishes she’d done differently.
“I was very quiet around my kids when they were babies and now they’re light sleepers,” she says. “So I wish that I had been a little more rough with them.”
Being in charge of children has its tough times for every parent, but for working mum Richie, it’s totally worth it — especially because she has a built-in entertainment team at every turn.
“Oh my God, they make me laugh every day,” the House of Harlow 1960designer says. “They make me laugh all the time. I’m always finding [funny] pictures on my phone of them that they take, and videos that they take.”
