Nine Perfect Strangers is slated to be the next big thing, and with an all-star cast, we’re getting caught up in the hype.
Based on the book of the same name by Australian author Liane Moriarty, the series focuses on nine individuals who visit Tranquilum House, a wellness retreat where things seem to become more and more unhinged as the days of their short visit pass by.
The excitement over Nine Perfect Strangers seems to be based on its following for a tried and tested format.
Nicole Kidman previously worked on Big Little Lies, another famous series based on a book by Liane Moriarty.
With castmates like Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Kravitz and Meryl Streep, it’s no wonder the production went on to win a series of Emmys and Golden Globe Awards.
The show wrapped in 2019, leaving space for something similar.
Nicole signed on to produce in May of 2019 with the series set to stream locally on Amazon Prime.
After the COVID-19 pandemic caused issues for filming in the US, the cast up and flew to Australia, all completing their mandatory 14-day quarantine period in order to be able to film in Byron Bay.
The filming of the series brought serious star power into Australia, with the likes of Melissa McCarthy, Bobby Cannavale, and Luke Evans coming in, some with their families in tow.
Let’s take a deep dive into this fantastic cast and check out the roles we’ll see them in!
Nicole Kidman
Nicole will play Masha, the eccentric founder of Tranquilum House, sporting creepy behaviour and something of a Russian accent. Masha seems to be quite villainous, and it’ll be interesting to see a more sinister side of Nicole.
Melissa McCarthy
Melissa McCarthy is one of Hollywood’s most accomplished comedy actresses, known for starring in the likes of Bridesmaids and The Heat. In Nine Perfect Strangers she will play Frances, a romance novelist who has fallen out of love with life. She will also be joined on screen by her husband and creative partner, filmmaker Ben Falcone, who will play her manipulative ex-partner.
Bobby Cannavale
Bobby Cannavale is an honorary Aussie, married to one of our greatest acting exports, Rose Byrne. He has been seen throughout the years on Will & Grace and Boardwalk Empire, proving himself to be quite the talent. He will play Tony in the show, a football player who is outrunning his past.
Regina Hall
Comedic actress Regina Hall has starred in the likes of Girls Trip and Black Monday, and is expected to bring the comedy to Nine Perfect Strangers, as well as a little share of the chaos. She stars as Carmel, who, in the book, was a mother of four kids whose husband up and left for a younger woman.
Asher Keddie
It doesn’t get more local than Asher Keddie, star of Offspring and Party Tricks, and we’re thrilled to see her making her American TV debut!
Speaking to Marie Claire, Asher revealed a special connection to the role, saying, “Liane Moriarty is one of my all-time favourite authors, and I love Nine Perfect Strangers for its brave dive into the psyche.”
“Pair that with two extraordinary women I’ve always wanted to work with, Nicole Kidman and Bruna Papandrea, suffice to say the offer was intoxicating. I can’t wait to begin,” she said.
Asher will star as Heather, who comes to Tranquilum House with her husband and daughter in the wake of a tragic family loss.
Michael Shannon
Bringing even more star power, Michael Shannon will join the cast as Napoleon, Heather’s husband. Audiences will be excited to see him in this role, considering he is usually cast as the villain, especially in the likes of The Shape of Water and Boardwalk Empire. Michael’s ‘prolific turn’ as Napoleon is apparently something to behold – expect it in Episode 5.
Grace Van Patten
Actress Grace Van Patten will join the cast as Zoe Marconi, who has come to Tranquilum House with her parents, Heather and Napoleon, and is also grieving a family loss. She is the youngest of the nine at age 20. Grace has previously appeared in Maniac and The Meyerowitz Stories.
Luke Evans
Luke Evans, who you’ll know from Beauty and the Beast and The Hobbit film franchise, will star as Lars, a wellness retreat veteran.
Samara Weaving
Home and Away alum Samara Weaving came home for Nine Perfect Strangers, where she will play Jessica, an influencer hoping to restore her relationship with her husband. Samara has made waves in her Hollywood career, starring in the likes of The Babysitter, Ready or Not, and Snake Eyes.
Melvin Gregg
Melvin Gregg will join the cast as Ben, Jessica’s husband. Melvin has also appeared in films The Way Back and The United States vs. Billie Holliday.
Tiffany Boone
Tiffany Boone will star as Delilah, Masha’s assistant who believes in the retreat, but has some doubt over Masha’s ways. Tiffany has been seen before in Hunters, and as a young Kerry Washington in Little Fires Everywhere.
Manny Jacinto
Manny is best known for playing the adorable Jason Mendoza in The Good Place, but will be exploring his range in the role of Yao, who is Masha’s dedicated right-hand man.
