Starring Felicity Jones, On the Basis of Sex is about US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s early career as a pioneering female attorney, long before she became the Notorious RBG. Watch the trailer below.
Ginsburg has to put up with condescension by male law professors and is rejected by New York City firms. Finally, she makes a name for herself with a landmark gender-discrimination case involving a man denied a tax credit he would have been entitled to as a woman.
Ginsburg is too decent a person to gloat over the obvious irony. A light, smoothly admiring biopic that could have used some of the cut-and-thrust of a good legal drama – it’s The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Before the Bench. Still, it’s informative, and that counts. (Out now) 3.5 stars
