REVIEW: ‘Pick of the Litter’

Try not to tear up in this heartwarming doco about aspiring guide dogs

It takes a certain type of dog to lead the blind. Not only are very specific breeds chosen, but prospective guide dogs go through a rigorous process that weeds out those animals not suited for the job.

Pick of the Litter (watch the trailer above) follows five pups from birth as they are trained with the hopes that they will be placed by California-based organisation Guide Dogs for the Blind. Which of Patriot, Potomac, Primrose, Poppet and Phil will make it as a career guide dog?

This documentary is more emotional than you might expect as it tracks the journeys of not only the dogs but all the volunteers and trainers as well, some of who are greatly experienced and some who are being placed with their first ever dog. Have your tissues handy! (In cinemas now) 3.5 stars
