All hitman Duncan Vizla (Mads Mikkelsen) wants to do is retire peacefully, but his former boss has other ideas.
A motley squad of bloodthirsty young assassins is sent to terminate him, leading to a rapidly increasing body count. Fairly derivative – John Wick and Tarantino come to mind when watching – the movie has a tiresome, outdated “more is more” approach to its highly stylised, fairly graphic violence.
Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, best known for his music videos for everyone from Madonna to Coldplay, Polar feels like a product of another era, more in a dated than a cool retro kind of way. Matt Lucas and Vanessa Hudgens, in the movie’s only understated performance, co-star. (On Netflix from Fri., Jan. 25) 2 stars
