The MasterChef Australia 2026 Grand Finale was a high-stakes affair as the two finalists, Petro and Vinnie, battled for the $250,000 grand prize with their family, friends, and former fellow contestants watching from the gantry.
After Vinnie was announced as this year’s winner, the competition ended in hugs, tears, and confetti-filled celebrations.
However, as many fans know, the contestants didn’t know the final result until it aired live on Sunday, with two different endings pre-recorded to prevent spoilers and keep the MasterChef magic alive.
This has received a mixed response from fans, with many calling the finale “dull” and “lacklustre” and blaming this on the pre-recorded production process.
“Clearly had a second recorded outcome because that reaction just looked like a bunch of bad actors, so also felt underwhelming,” one fan wrote online. “I wish that wasn’t a thing.”
“How anticlimactic was that?” another commented on X. “If they didn’t spend two hours on BS they would’ve been able to put a little more into the ending… how terrible.”
Although their frustration is understandable, what many viewers don’t realise is how necessary this filming process is to protect Australian audiences from spoilers – something that both MasterChef judge Andy Allen and grand finalists Vinnie and Petro spoke to WHO about.
Andy Allen reveals ‘brutal’ filming reality: ‘It’s not lovely’
While Andy stressed the importance of having to film two endings, he didn’t hold back in telling WHO that the production process was “brutal”.
“I’m not going to lie, it’s brutal,” he said. “It’s unfortunately the only way to be able to keep it a secret and really make sure that this doesn’t get out.”
The MasterChef judge also confessed that it’s as much for the contestants as it is for the audience, as the cooks go through “five and a half months of intensity in that MasterChef kitchen”, so having the result leaked before the finale would be “devastating”.
“It’s not lovely,” Andy said. “I’m not going to sit here and say that it’s all beautiful and we all high-five and we get back to business, but it’s just one of the things that we have to do with a reality TV show.
“The contestants do know that it could be either ending. So, they’re exactly the same. It’s crazy that there are still tears – whichever ending is done, there are still tears – there’s still real emotion like it all really does play out exactly the same but a little bit different.”
Petro and Vinnie comment on the pre-recorded process: ‘It was a bit weird’
Both Petro and Vinnie admitted that they found filming the different endings challenging.
Petro confessed that he found it a little harder to act like he was the winner after realising he was so behind in points.
“Yeah, look, it was a bit weird,” Petro told us. “It’s a bit of a hard process, but it’s a necessary one so nothing leaks.
“The fact that I was fairly far behind – it was probably a little bit harder for me to act. But that’s just the way it goes. You just have to do the best job you can.”
Meanwhile, Vinnie unpacked how producers prepped them ahead of filming the alternative endings.
“I feel like it is needed, but during the filming, we had like a bit of a pep talk from our producers and they’re like, ‘It sucks that we have to do this, but make the most of it and you will feel like you’ve won when they call out your name and it was very true,'” Vinnie said. “That’s what I did.
“I just went in there and I made the most of it and it did feel like I had won. Then, watching last night and it all unfold, that just confirmed [that feeling], it was just really, really cool.”
