For the first invention challenge of MasterChef this season, contestants had to literally think outside the (cereal) box with a task that exposed what’s needed to win. On Tuesday night, contestants had to be “inventive” and incorporate cereal into their dishes, and while some cooks took risks that paid off, some didn’t quite have the quick thinking required to shine.
Contestant Dot McHugh — who seriously impressed the judges last night — told WHO about the mindset required to stay calm and creative under pressure.
While it still may be too early to predict who will make it to the end, thefirst invention challenge exposed a lot of cracks and a lot of strengths.

Sneak peek into what’s needed to excel in the invention challenge
Fans were divided over how inventive the dishes really were in the first invention challenge, with many grateful that “the ‘invention’ aspect is being taken seriously this season”, and others hoping for a little more creativity.
“Some of these dishes really felt like inventions, while like some were obviously just shoehorned, battered, or just put in as flavourings in some way,” one fan write online. “I feel like the cornflake grits was so clever, like really an invention.”
The chef of this cornflake grits dish, Dot, wasn’t only praised by fans, but the judges too.
Speaking to WHO, she revealed the secret that led to her safety for tonight’s elimination round.
Self-proclaimed “savoury girl”, Dot said the lack of preparation time for the challenges on MasterChef was the most unexpected part, meaning she had to lean into “learning on the spot” on the show.
“I honestly thought you would get more information than you did, you very much walk in and are told the challenge and that is it,” she said. “You have minutes, that quick thinking was something I didn’t realise was so important.
“You just have to brace yourself for the unknown and get comfortable being uncomfortable.”
While her cornflake polenta, grits, and meatballs dish had us salivating, there were five contestants who’s dishes weren’t quite up to scratch.
Who’s up for elimination tomorrow night?
Contestants Dot, Aaron, and Petro were praised by the judges for their inventions.
However, the dishes created by Pat, Jackie, Jeff, Luke, and Vinnie were off the mark for the judges.
Now, these five chefs will be facing off in tomorrow’s elimination challenge and one of them will be sent home.
The pressure is on!
