After the first round of eliminations took place on Monday night, viewers were reminded of just how much pressure the contestants on MasterChef face. However, despite the intensity of the challenges, fans have applauded how the companionship and spirit of the show remains in tact — unlike other well-known reality TV shows in Australia.
As fans said goodbye to Megs, the first top 24 contestant to be eliminated from the season, they also were reminded of why they watch the show in the first place.
“I’ve always been so impressed by the support, encouragement and genuine consideration the contestants show each other every year,” one fan wrote online. “That, together with the attitude of the judges, are some of the best parts of the show.”
However, Jackie Yu – who just narrowly missed elimination last night – spoke to WHO about the behind-the-scenes detail that surprised her most about MasterChef after she went from being a fan watching from home to a contestant.
Spoiler alert: the pressure is real.

The MasterChef detail that puts pressure on every elimination
Jackie spoke to WHO about the behind-the-scenes reality of MasterChef, and said what surprised her most was “how quick everything goes.”
“You see the challenges when you’re watching it and you get set these 60 minute, 75 minute challenges, but when you’re there and you’re doing it, time just disappears so quickly,” she told WHO. “You feel like you haven’t even started cooking and it’s already time to finish.”
So, if you’re watching from home and are feeling the pressure of that timer counting down, just imagine how intense it is for the contestants!
During Monday night’s elimination challenge (which was to cook a dish that gave judges an insight in their home life) was a wake-up call for many contestants as the 75 minute time pressure almost lost some home cooks their aprons.
In the end, the elimination was between Jackie, who didn’t plate her duck, and Megs, who plated her not-quite-cooked prawns.
Since Jackie had her shallot pancake to fall back on, Megs was the unlucky contestant sent home.

During the high-pressure round, Jackie was in such a rush that she accidentally cut herself while cooking, but soldiered on.
Fans praised her for her determination and indicating just how supportive MasterChef is as a reality TV show.
“Our girl Jackie is resilient and brave,” one fan wrote online. “Injury could have happened to anyone and I feel as though she kept going and stayed calm.”
With contestants challenged to invent cereal tonight, we have no doubt the pressure will continue.
