Richard Madden, 32, broke hearts everywhere when he died infamous Red Wedding scene end of Season 3.

Now, as the lead actor in the BBC series Bodyguard (now streaming on Netflix), Madden reveals he still can’t wrap his head around his new-found fame and the instant success of the series.

What is Bodyguard?

The series follows the ups and downs of trauma-suffering war veteran Sergeant David Budd (Madden) who is assigned to protect Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), yet he disagrees with her morality.

“It’s been completely overwhelming and I really haven’t caught up with it yet,” he tells WHO. “I hear these figures about how many people have watched it, and I still don’t think it’s true.”

When it comes to a second season, Madden reveals that although he isn’t in production talks, he would love to return to the screen.

“I’m open to it. I love playing [my character David Budd] on this show,” he says. “I am sure [the producer] is bubbling up some wonderful ideas on it.”

In terms of his skyrocketing fame, the Scottish actor says he manages heightened “waves” of attention from the public by not paying too much attention and avoiding it when he can. “These things come in waves and when Game Of Thrones comes out you have the wave of attention and little bit more spotlight on you again. And then it dies down. It is the same with Bodyguard.

In preparation for his role as a war counterpart, Madden had to undertake extensive research into the impact of conflict on a soldier’s mental health.

“It was one of the hardest things for me maybe best not to personally involve yourself. The research made life very difficult. I have some friends who have been in the army and other friends who are suffering from PTSD.”

With his new-found character profile as a police sergeant, rumours have emerged that Madden may be set to portray James Bond in the future, but the actor puts the gossip to rest. “I have heard about it – it’s really flattering to have my name even mentioned in that conversation – but to the best of my knowledge, that’s all hearsay.”
