Their son Nick’s battle with addiction

In a 2016 interview with People, Nick spoke about his long battle with drug addiction that started in his early teens and eventually left him homeless.
He told the outlet that his stints in and out of rehab began around age 15, however, as his addiction worsened, he moved further away from home and spent large stretches of time homeless in other US states.
Nick told the outlet that the nights and sometimes weeks he spent sleeping outside later became the inspiration for the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote.
“Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in L.A. and being around my family,” Nick told the outlet at the time.
