When she packed up her Sydney life to move to Europe and take a chance on love, Queen Mary admits it all wasn’t smooth sailing.
“I did experience a feeling of loneliness – short-term – when I first moved to Denmark,” she told the Australian Women’s Weekly in 2017.
“Moving to Denmark was a huge change in my life – a new culture, new language, new friends, and another way of life.”
Eventually, the then-princess was able to turn those feelings of isolation into her best asset.
Realising she could “be a voice for those who are not usually heard”, the royal founded The Mary Foundation in 2007.
Today, a cornerstone of their work is tackling social problems such as bullying, domestic violence and loneliness.
Now, Mary’s experience with loneliness has influenced her latest project with the Queen announcing a new podcast.
What is Queen Mary’s podcast about?
On November 25, the Danish Queen announced a new podcast was coming out through her not-for-profit organisation, the Mary Foundation.
The three-part series, called Lonely Youth, will examine the loneliness epidemic among young people.
“We know from the study ‘Loneliness in Denmark’ that 73 per cent of 16-19 year olds experience loneliness, whether they are alone or with others. At the same time, 17 per cent of 16-24 year olds feel very lonely,” Mary posted on Instagram.
“These are heavy numbers that we need to do something about. A podcast is not something we have much experience with yet in the Mary Foundation, but I hope you will listen and feel welcome.”
The Queen also shared how much she enjoys listening to a good poddy.
“I’m extremely excited to be listening to a podcast. I often listen when I have to move from one place to another,” she wrote.
“I also listen to podcasts when moving places! Some days I’m in the mood for entertainment and other days I use it to gain knowledge and new input.”
Mary isn’t the first royal to be involved with a podcast.
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, previously released a holiday special with Prince Harry.
She also hosted Archetypes in 2022.
Queen Camilla, Sarah, Duchess of York and Mike Tindall have also made podcasts.

Queen Mary has a new reason to smile and it is easy to see why.
On November 3, the royal couldn’t wipe the grin off her face as she attended the Danish Hospital Clown Conference.
The non-profit organisation helps bring joy to sick kids who are hospitalised due to illness or injury.
The clowns undergo special training which can take up to a year-and-a-half to complete to be ready to hit the wards.

“When [my daughters] will be seen in something that is mine, it always brings a smile to my face,” Mary told North West Star.
The sweet outing left royal watchers astounded over one detail.
“When did Josephine become so grown up?” asked a fan on social media.

It was a far cry from what her majesty was wearing just days before in Sydney.
Mary soaked up the sun and sea at Balmoral Beach on October 30.
The Queen also took a dip after she did the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk with friends.
It is understood Mary jetted Down Under to attend her niece’s wedding in Tasmania before making a quick pitstop in Sydney ahead of catching a flight home on October 31 to carry out the engagement which was scheduled in her official diary.
