The first official photo of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft for the upcoming Tomb Raider television series has set the internet alight, with fans finally getting a glimpse of the actress in one of the gaming world’s most recognisable roles.
The photo, released by Prime Video, shows Turner wearing Lara’s signature green tank top and brown shorts – a clear nod to the character’s iconic style from the beloved games released 30 years ago on PlayStation.
Turner was announced as the lead in September 2025 and admitted she has “massive shoes to fill”, referring to the iconic status the character has built over nearly three decades.
Who is Sophie Turner?

Turner, who grew up in England, first became a household name as Sansa Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones.
She later appeared as Jean Grey in the X-Men franchise, cementing her reputation as a major screen presence and a Hollywood A-lister.
Taking on Lara Croft marks a significant new chapter in her career, placing her at the centre of another iconic action-adventure franchise.
Who played Lara Croft before?

Turner follows in the footsteps of two major Hollywood stars.
Angelina Jolie famously portrayed Lara Croft in the early 2000s film adaptations, while Alicia Vikander took on the role in the 2018 reboot.
Each version brought a different interpretation of the character, and Turner’s portrayal will mark Lara’s first live-action television adaptation.

Who is directing Lara Croft

Tomb Raider is created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, best known for Fleabag.
She also serves as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Chad Hodge.
Jonathan van Tulleken will direct episodes of the series and executive produce, while Legendary Television and Amazon MGM Studios are among the production partners.
While gaming fans may be concerned about another adaptation of the character, the show is being developed in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics – the studio behind the video game franchise.
What is Tomb Raider about?

The original Tomb Raider game launched in 1996, developed by UK studio Core Design.
At a time when females were rare in gaming, Lara Croft became a global phenomenon, appearing on magazine covers and evolving into a cultural icon. She is widely considered a LGBTQI+ icon.
The franchise was rebooted in 2013 with a more grounded and character-focused version of Lara, a direction that influenced later titles including Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018.
Who is producing Tom Raider?
The new series arrives during a renewed boom in video game adaptations. Minecraft: The Movie broke box office records last year, so it’s no surprise Prime Video snatched the franchise up!
The streaming service has already seen major success with Fallout, and is also developing a God of War series starring Ryan Hurst as Kratos.
Crystal Dynamics has also announced two upcoming Tomb Raider games slated for release in the coming years that will be a reimagined version of Lara’s original adventure and a brand-new story set in Northern India.
When will Tomb Raider premiere?
With filming now underway and the first image released, anticipation is building for Prime Video’s take on Tomb Raider.
