Matildas midfielder Emily Van Egmond and her wife, Kat Thompson, have announced they are expecting their first child!
Sharing the exciting news on Instagram in April 2025, the couple posed together alongside a sonogram picture, captioning the announcement, “Baby Van Egmond coming October ❤️.”
Taking to the comments to share their congratulations, Matildas captain and fellow mother-to-be Sam Kerr wrote, “Let’s goooooo 😍.”
“Congrats to you both!!😍😇,” added Mary Fowler.
“Omg congrats!!! So happy for you guys ❤️❤️,” wrote teammate Charli Grant.
On the field, Emily has been instrumental in the success of the Matildas over the better part of a decade. The Newcastle-born 31-year-old first played for the Girls in Gold in 2010, and in the years since has competed in the Asian Cup, the Women’s FIFA World Cup and the Olympics alongside her Tillies teammates.
With over 100 games in the gold jersey now under her belt, Emily has earned herself a legion of fans who closely follow her life both on the pitch and off.

Is Emily Van Egmond in a relationship?
Emily is currently in a relationship with Kat Thompson, a photographer based in San Diego, California.
The pair first met online in 2022, but it was only in February 2023 that the couple went ‘Instagram official, ’ with Kat sharing a Valentine’s Day tribute to her partner.
“From the first date, there’s never been holding back, it’s been so comfortable – as if I’ve known her a lot longer,” Emily later told our sister site New Idea.
The following April, Emily herself took to Instagram to share snaps of the happy couple for the first time.
“I feel like she brings out a really good side of me,” the soccer star later told New Idea. “I’m very happy.”
Is Emily Van Egmond married?
Despite posting a few pictures of themselves to social media, the pair have remained pretty tight-lipped on any other details about their relationship – however, they delighted fans in December 2024 when they revealed they had tied the knot in New South Wales.
The couple shared a few snaps from the day as well as a video of the pair “walking into [their] wedding day.”
In May 2023, Emily announced that she had proposed to Kat.
“I feel like she brings out a really good side of me,” Emily told New Idea following the engagement. “I’m very happy.”
Emily popped the question with a stunning ring that she designed herself, and her new fiancée Kat admitted she had “no clue” what was happening at the time. “I was crying,” she told the publication.
Ahead of their nuptials, the pair divulged details of their wedding planning to the publication, explaining that they were opting for a wedding in Australia – but were mindful of Emily’s busy soccer schedule.
“I’m married to football now,” Kat joked at the time. “We are aiming for the summer,” Emily added. “It’s not going to be a massive crazy wedding.”
Following the wedding, the couple also teased that adding to their brood was also on the table, with Kat telling New Idea that the couple had dreams of a “little family coming up.”
