Whether you’re a diehard football fan or a newcomer to the world of the Matildas, you’ve definitely heard about team captain Sam Kerr.
Scoring the most international goals of any Australian football player, the 31-year-old (literally) backflipped her way into the hearts of Australians across the country following her triumphant performance in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Despite the United States Women’s National Soccer Team being fierce rivals of the Tillies throughout the World Cup and 2024 Olympic Games, their competitiveness is reserved strictly for the pitch, with Sam finding her match in the form of Team USA midfielder Kristie Mewis.
Now, as the couple announce the exciting news that they are expecting their first child together, we take a look back at their love story.

Do Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis have children?
In November 2024, Sam and Kristie made the exciting announcement that they were expecting their first child together.
Taking to Instagram, Sam shared a collection of old-school photo booth snaps proudly showing off sonogram pictures and Kristie’s growing baby bump, with Sam captioning the announcement, “Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!”
Are Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis engaged?
Yes! Sam and Kristie are currently engaged, with the couple confirming their engagement in late November 2023.
Sharing a photo of her proposal to Instagram, Sam revealed that she popped the question to Kristie on September 1, 2023 – shortly after the couple’s World Cup appearance.
The confirmation came over two months after eagle-eyed fans first spotted Kristie’s engagement ring during her appearance in the EA FC 24 video game trailer.

How did Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis meet?
Sam and Kristie first met in 2019 while competing against each other during a US National Women’s Soccer League tournament match.
Reflecting on their first on-field meeting, Sam previously told Gaffer, “I thought her team was crazy. When I play I’m such a s*** stirrer and she was getting so angry… We always talked about this one time where she tried to get the ball. It was a free kick for her team. She put the ball down, and I kicked it away and was like ‘Really?'”
Despite the slightly tense first meeting, Sam and Kristie’s romance quickly began to blossom, with the two athletes forging their friendship – then relationship – over Instagram during the worldwide pandemic lockdowns.
“It was about three or four months until we could hang out in person. The first time we ever met there was quarantine, so we had to spend two weeks together the first time we met. I was thinking if I don’t like her, this is going to be awkward,” Sam joked.

When did Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis start dating?
As the couple began to hit it off online, fans were quick to speculate that Sam and Kristie were in a relationship.
Rumours surrounding their romance peaked following the bronze medal match between Australia and the United States at the Tokyo Olympic Games, with the couple sharing a heartwarming moment on the pitch following Australia’s narrow defeat.

Shortly after the match, Sam and Kristie *finally* confirmed their relationship, with Sam sharing a polaroid of the couple kissing and Kristie sharing a selfie to Instagram.
Speaking on their decision to go public as a couple, Kristie told Gaffer, “I think it’s endearing to share your life with other people because I think if they can relate to you and you can maybe change their lives, I think it’s important, especially with our platform, to share.”
“We didn’t share it for ages, then it just got too hard to hide it… We’re not private people. I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football. Football is 5% of my life,” Sam continued.

Where does Sam Kerr live?
When they’re not playing for their respective national teams, Sam and Kristie split their time between the US and the UK, with Kristie playing for New York’s Gotham FC in the NWSL and Sam for Chelsea FC in the FA Women’s Super League.
“We always said it would be easier if we played in the same league because we would have the same winter break, we’d have the same summer break, but I think that when it is the opposite, she can come and see me after her season ends… so it does end up working out,” Kristie said.
Speaking on their long-distance relationship, Sam added, “I think the thing that keeps us going is that we can see an endpoint. We both just want each other to do well in our careers. I don’t think you could be in a long-distance relationship with someone who didn’t get the sport.”
