Three years after Timothée Chalamet first took to the screen as Paul Atredies, the story of Dune is officially getting a female-led spin-off.
Premiering in November 2024, Dune: Prophecy will delve deeper into the origins of the legendary rift between House Atreides and the Harkonnens, with the story focusing on the establishment of the powerful Bene Gesserit sisterhood.
Speaking to The Guardian, Dune director Denis Villeneuve shared, “The Bene Gesserit have always been so fascinating to me. Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series.”
As fans prepare for the next chapter of the sci-fi epic, we round up what you need to know about Dune: Prophecy.
What is Dune: Prophecy about?
Set 10,000 years before the time of Paul Atredies, Dune: Prophecy follows sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen as they attempt to combat hidden forces that seek to threaten the future of humanity.
Based on Brian Hebert’s prequel novel, Sisterhood of Dune, the new spin-off series will also provide the backstory to the enigmatic sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit, established by the Harkonnen sisters, and the route of their superhuman powers.
While the cast has kept the plot details under wraps, series star Josh Heuston tells WHO that fans can expect a more in-depth exploration of one of the franchise’s most renowned households.
“I’m excited for fans to see Dune on this grand scale while also being a more intimate drama. You see the family dynamics a lot more. In the film franchise, there’s a lot more war and things of that scale, but in this, you get to see more of the politics of what’s going on. “
Who is the cast of Dune: Prophecy?
Leading the cast of Dune: Prophecy is Chernobyl’s Emily Watson and Victoria & Abdul’s Olivia Williams as sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen.
Joining the on-screen sisterhood is The Witcher star Jodhi May as Empress Natalya, The Bridge’s Sarah-Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez, Doctor Doctor’s Shalom Brune-Franklin as Fremen woman Mikaela, Faoileann Cunningham as Sister Jen, and Normal People’s Aoife Hinds as Sister Emeline.
Also joining the Dune cinematic universe are Australian stars Travis Fimmel and Chris Mason as soldiers Desmond Hart and Keiran Atredies, Heartbreak High’s Josh Heuston as Constantine Corrino, Brendan Cowell as Duke Ferdinand Richese, and Bridgerton’s Yerin Ha as Young Kasha.
“There were so many Aussies, I felt like I was at a barbecue in space. It was wonderful because I always wanted to hang with those guys, so it felt quite surreal. To see those guys kicking it overseas is pretty inspiring,” Brendan Cowell told WHO at the Australian premiere.
When is the Dune: Prophecy release date?
After two years of production, Dune: Prophecy will be released on November 18, 2024.
