After 11 years on air, Modern Family came to an end in 2020, but the conclusion of the sitcom didn’t stop fans hoping for more episodes.
Fortunately for fans, the beloved cast members of the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker family have still kept us up to date with many wholesome reunion snaps, but could an official reunion series be in the works? Here’s what we know.
Will there be a Modern Family reunion?
Although nothing has been set in stone just yet, Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson sparked reunion rumours in May 2024 after sharing a photo on set, teasing fans with the caption “haven’t seen this view in a while.”
The actor, who played Mitchell Pritchett in the long-running sitcom, further fuelled fan theories after also posting a video of himself alongside his on-screen daughter Lily, played by Aubrey Anderson-Emmons.
Eric Stonestreet, who played Mitchell’s husband Cameron Tucker also shared a photo alongside the same caption.
Since their on-set crossover, the trio have refrained from commenting on whether a reunion is actually happening – but other cast members have also been publicly hinting at the future of Modern Family.
“I don’t like to do that stuff,” Ed O’Neill, who plays Jay Pritchett, previously told TV Insider about reunions, before admitting he would make an exception for Modern Family.
“I mean, I am open to it. I like everybody involved, so I wouldn’t be the guy who [says no if everyone else wants to]. I wouldn’t do that,” he explained.
“I would do it in a second,” confirmed Sofía Vergara, telling The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter Podcast that she was hopeful for another run at playing Gloria Delgado-Pritchett.
Later in 2024, actress Julie Bowen, who portrays Claire Dunphy, also addressed rumours surrounding a potential reunion, confirming that she would be interested in reprising her role.
“Of course, I would be game. I can’t imagine any of us wouldn’t be. We’re stupid for each other,” she told the New York Post.
Despite her enthusiasm, Bowen revealed that she had “no idea” whether a reunion special would be taken up by the series’ creators, adding, “You know, that’s up to [Steven] Levitan and [Christopher] Lloyd in the end.”
The cast of Modern Family sparked initial rumours surrounding their reunion in November 2023, when they had their very own family reunion. The stars of the hit TV show took to Instagram to share photos of the get-together, which included almost the full cast.
“Nearly perfect @modernfamily reunion,” Ferguson captioned his set of photos from the night, which reunited Bowen, Sarah Hyland, Stonestreet, Nolan Gould, O’Neil, Vergara, Ariel Winter, Rico Rodriguez and Anderson-Emmons.
Fans were quick to call out the absence of Ty Burell, who played Phil Dunphy, and although no reason was given as to why he couldn’t make it, the rest of the cast clearly missed him, instead posing with a framed photograph of the actor.
Stonestreet shared a little bit more insight into the framed picture of Phil in his own caption explaining; “For 11 years we would take family pictures for Modern Family and without missing one ever, I would always say, ‘now let’s do one without Ty.’ Last night Ty couldn’t make it to our little impromptu reunion, so I had to bring his favourite picture of Phil so we could ‘do one without Ty.”
“I can see how this looks but Ty is alive and well I PROMISE😂❤️,” added Winter. “He’ll definitely be there for the next one 😉🎉”
Modern Family drew to an end in 2020 after 11 seasons. The show follows three modern-day families who are interrelated through their patriarch as they deal with their kids, quirky spouses and jobs in their own unique ways.
Not only was the long-running comedy a hit with fans, but it earned a number of awards throughout its run. The show was awarded the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series for five years running.
Both Stonestreet and Burrell won Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series twice, whilst Bowen also won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series twice.
The show won a total of 22 Emmy awards from 75 nominations and also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2011.
