With his good looks and squeaky-clean reputation, Matt Agnew has been dubbed as one of the most eligible Bachelor’s we’ve seen to date. However, insiders have since revealed that the hunky astrophysicist isn’t as flawless as viewers have been led to believe.
According to New Idea, before appearing on the show, Matt fell in love with a Swedish professor he met while studying in Europe. The then-couple— who kept their romance a secret— is said to have often met late at night in the Lund University Observatory.
“Matt had a steamy fling with his tutor while he was doing his Master’s in Sweden,” the well-placed insider dished. “It started out as a bit of fun but before it was time to leave he’d developed genuine and deep feelings for her. Obviously, Matt and his mystery lady had astrophysics in common and were at the same level intellectually.”
Since appearing on this popular dating franchise, Matt has gone to great lengths to cover up his shocking past from this year’s Bachelorettes, as the insider claims he’s worried his sneaky fling with the teacher will shatter his “good boy” image.

“He thinks it’s going to change the public perception of him. There is so much pressure to be this great guy and he doesn’t want to disappoint anyone.”
While their fling is over and Matt has found The One, the insider says he can’t shake the feelings from the romance… and they’d still be together if the circumstances were different!
“She is on his mind a lot. This whole process of finding love on TV has really brought back those emotions and it’s made him feel torn about some of the decisions he has made.
“He had to come back to Australia and she had her whole life over there,” the source continued. “Of course, they talked about the what-ifs – but there was so much stacked against them. Applying for The Bachelor was a distraction, really.”
This isn’t the only scandal the brainy scientist has been trying to hose down. Last month, The Sydney Morning Herald revealed that the astrophysicist actually works as an analyst at NAB’s Melbourne head office on secondment. Strangely enough, his current day job isn’t listed on his lengthy LinkedIn profile— Perhaps Network Ten is riding the “brainy” wave all the way to the finale?
Unfortunately, NAB wasn’t prepared to confirm Matt’s position, with a spokesperson for the bank claiming they keep their staff’s information private.
“We treat personal information about our employees and contractors as confidential,” a spokeswoman said. “Quantium do from time to time provide contractors to NAB.”
Despite all of this, Matt still maintains he studies planetary science.
“My specific research is about planetary science, so the stuff I’m doing is trying to figure out where another planet like Earth could exist, so we could actually look and find it,” said Matt, who has a double undergraduate degree in science and engineering as well as a masters in astrophysics.
