It was a sought-after prize, but Courtney and Sev's kitchen wasn't as glamorous as fans thought it would be.

Winning $250,000 worth of kitchen appliances sounds like the kind of prize on The Block that’s a major advantage, and one which many of us would like to take home for ourselves.

Courtney and Sev certainly had plenty to celebrate when they walked away with the massive E&S appliance package earlier in the competition, splurging on their budget in the challenge that week to win the room reveal and nab the sought-after prize. However, now that their kitchen has finally been revealed and fitted into their house, some viewers are questioning whether the prize came with an unexpected catch.

While the judges were impressed by what Courtney and Sev had done with the space, some viewers felt the stainless steel made the kitchen feel more like a commercial kitchen than a luxury home.

And, you could say this reflected in the scores, with Courtney and Sev finishing third this week.

Courtney and Sev’s $250,000 ‘advantage‘

The judges were largely impressed with what Courtney and Sev did with their $250,000 appliance haul. Marty Fox could picture a chef falling for the kitchen, while the judges agreed the team had softened the commercial feel.

There were a couple of sticking points, including the hidden second sink and distinct pantry doors, but the powder room was a clear winner, with Darren calling it “finessed and beautiful and expensive and visually appealing”, while Shaynna Blake declared it her favourite of the day.

So, from the judges’ perspective, the girls had managed to make their very industrial-looking prize work. The viewers, however, weren’t quite so sold.

Fans think the kitchen feels too ‘commercial‘

Despite the positive feedback from the judges, viewers watching at home had a very different take on the appliances. Several fans questioned whether the stainless steel package was simply too difficult to incorporate into a warm, high-end home kitchen.

“Anyone else think the appliance package the girls won, all that stainless steel, would’ve been tough to design a kitchen around?” one viewer asked.

Another agreed, saying the kitchen was “way too commercial” for the high-end “lux” look the judges have been calling for throughout the competition. Others felt the appliances dominated the space, particularly the large fridge and chunky handles on the ovens.

“I just thought the fridge was way too bulky, heavy industrial and commercial cafe/kitchen looking,” one viewer wrote, while another simply declared: “The appliances ruined the look and feel of the kitchen”.

The criticism didn’t stop there, with some viewers saying they had concerns about the appliances even before they were installed. “Totally agree I said that before the appliances were even installed they are way too commercial for a home kitchen,” one person commented.

There were also plenty of questions about just how practical some of the appliances would be for an everyday buyer. “I feel the average person would need a phd to operate most of these appliances!” another viewer joked.

Did the $250,000 prize work against them?

The $250,000 appliance package should have been a huge advantage for Courtney and Sev, but while the judges praised how the girls softened the commercial feel, some viewers clearly weren’t convinced. Love it or hate it, Courtney and Sev’s kitchen has certainly got fans talking — but it didn’t get them the win.
