Certified legend Tobias Menzies accidentally just announced when season 3 of The Crown is dropping.
WATCH: A FIRST LOOK AT SEASON 3
Tobias— who replaces Matt Smith as an older Prince Phillip in Netflix’s royal drama—was speaking to BBC’s Jo Good when he casually slipped up, revealing that the upcoming season will drop in November 2019.
“We shot season three and that starts in November,” the Outlander and Game of Thrones veteran actor revealed.
More than 18 months after season two premiered, the third instalment is expected to cover from 1954 to the late 1970s.
The upcoming season will see Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite) take over Claire Foy‘s role as Queen Elizabeth. Helena Bonham will replace Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, Gillian Anderson (The Fall) will star as Margaret Thatcher, Emerald Fennell (Call The Midwife) as Camilla Parker Bowles, and Emma Corrin will star as Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales.
Below is absolutely everything you need to know about season 3!
FRESH FACES
“Not only are we casting real-life characters but as we get closer to the present day, many of these people are very much alive,” The Crown casting director Nina Gold told Vanity Fair of selecting new stars. “So we have to honour them by picking the right actor”.
The Heirs
Charles and Anne will be portrayed by more adult actors, taking centre stage form child stars Billy Jenkins and Julian Baring, and Lyla Barrett-Rye as the only princess of the new generation. In this era the pair graduated from school and embarked on first loves, including Charles’s romance with Camilla and Anne’s with Camilla’s future husband Andrew Parker Bowles.
NEW CHARACTERS
Princess Diana
It’s the big question: when will the People’s Princess appear in The Crown? It has been suggested Diana will appear towards the end of season 3, before becoming a major part of the show in season 4.
Camilla Parker Bowles
Meanwhile, Prince Charles’s current wife will be introduced in season 3.
The Prime Ministers
We’ve seen Elizabeth tame her fair share of PMS, and season 3 will be no different. The Queen will go toe-to-toe with Harold Wilson, who served from 1964-1970 and 1974-76. And that’s before Margaret Thatcher comes to power in 1979. She’ll most likely make her Iron Lady presence felt in season 4.
SWAPPING ROLES
With the principal cast being replaces for seasons 3 and 4, meet the fresh faces earmarked to play HM and HRH.

After transforming Elizabeth from nervous royal to confident Queen, Claire Foy farewells The Crown. Taking her place is Olivia Colman, who viewers will recognise from Broadchurch.

Vanessa Kirby stole the show as Margaret and reports Helena Bonham Carter is stepping into the princess’s kitten heels were seemingly sanctioned by a January post by Kirby of the duo captioned, “Honoured.”

“Say hello to your new Prince Philip…Tobias Menzies!” announced Netflix on March 29. The actor who had a tough gig on Outlander, takes over from Matt Smith as the Duke if Edinburgh.
