After multiple on-set Instagram pics of the cast in character, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the first trailer for the new season of Big Little Lies has dropped!
Sure, we don’t get to see a whole lot of the Monterey housewives, but it sure has gotten us excited about the drama-filled episodes which are set to air later this year. The trailer released shows Reece Witherspoon returning as Madeline Martha Mackenzie and Nicole Kidman as the abused housewife Celeste Wright chatting with Meryl Streep, who joined the cast as Celeste’s mother-in-law—Mary Louise Wright— and returns to her son’s hometown after his death to visit her grandchildren. Despite her good intentions, Mary appears to stir up a lot of drama with Celeste in the wake of her son’s death.
Earlier this year after Streep announced she was joining the star-studded cast, The Daily Telegraph reported that the author of Big Little Lies, Liane Moriarty wrote the role of Mary Wright with Streep in mind.
“I was about halfway through (writing) and I was talking to the producers and I said, I’ve got this role of Perry’s mother and … not quite believing my own audacity, I’d like Meryl to play this character,” she said. “The producers were teasing me … but then they were saying, it’s not beyond the realm of possibilities because Nicole and Meryl are friends,” Moriarty said.
Weeks later, after Kidman had confirmed with Streep that she would play the newest addition to the hit drama, she emailed the now world famous Aussie author saying, “you ask and you shall receive!”
Joining Streep, the original women, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz and Laura Dern will return for the series’ reprise.
