Shut up! After 14 years the Princess of Genovia is coming back to the big screen! Well, not officially but a girl can dream, right?
During an episode of Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, Anne Hathaway, who played Mia Thermopolis in the Disney classics, revealed that the entire cast is on board for Princess Diaries Three!
“A script has already been written,” she said as fans cheered. “I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen.”
Yep, you read that correctly. Dame Julie Andrews is down to play Queen Clarisse Renaldi again… and that’s pretty huge news considering she not only declined a cameo appearance in Mary Poppins Returns but hasn’t physically featured in a film since her small part in the 2010 movie, Tooth Fairy.
Even before Hathaway confirmed a screenplay had been written, Meg Cabot— the author of the hit novel the films are based on— told Entertainment Weekly that after the film’s director Garry Marshall died in 2016, they considered pursuing the third instalment in his honour.
She said the film would be “kind of as a tribute” to Marshall. “So, who knows? [It] could happen, as we say,” Cabot admitted.
But before you get your hopes up, Hathaway said filming will only go ahead if everyone is on board with what the film has in store for their characters.
“It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it, so…”
Fingers crossed!
