During a Facebook Live interview to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of cult ’90s film, Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion, the film’s director David Mirkin revealed a secret about the casting process.
Mirkin confessed that after seeing Australian actress Toni Collette in her breakout film, Muriel’s Wedding, he became eager to cast her in one of the leading roles.
“Toni was really interesting and terrific,” he said. “I think she was a little worried about nailing what we wanted to do with the [LA] Valley accent and energy. So I don’t think she was completely comfortable.”

After reaching out to Collette, Mirkin revealed that the star turned down the role of Romy which ultimately went to Mira Sorvino.
“Toni ultimately decided not to go ahead — nothing was official and you’d have to ask her, but I think she was a little concerned with the accent. Just nailing the nature of a Valley-ish girl accent at that point,” he told Buzzfeed News.
