Displaced from her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to hipster central Portland, Oregon, by her dad and his new wife has not been easy on Elodie (Brianna Hildebrand), the teen at the centre of new Netflix series Trinkets (watch the trailer below).
But the newcomer develops an unlikely rapport with two girls from her school year – not because they bond at the cafeteria; rather they all wind up in the same Shoplifters Anonymous support group.
Despite moving in very different circles, Elodie and her light-fingered friends, tough girl Moe (Kiana Madeira) and Tabitha (Quintessa Swindell), who’s part of the cool clique, discover – wait for it – that they have more in common than they first thought.
Despite the novelty of centring a teen series on petty thieves, much of the premise of Trinkets is Teen Drama 101. There are the mean girls, the high school parties, the loser boyfriend one of the girls could do so much better than, the clashes with parents …
But there are glimmers (and not just from the necklace one of the girls pilfers) that this could develop into something more than another bout of run-of-the-mill high school angst. (On Netflix now) 3 stars
