REVIEW: Foxtel’s ‘A Discovery of Witches’

Starring Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode

Diana (Palmer) is hiding a massive secret: she’s a witch.

The academic has kept her powers under wraps, but her true nature makes its presence felt when she stumbles across a long-lost manuscript that holds the key to opening the magical world. As Diana reluctantly embraces the skills she inherited from her parents, who were killed when she was a child, she crosses paths with dashing – is there any other kind? – vampire Matthew (Goode), who helps her navigate the dangers of the other world.

An adaptation of the All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness, this is standard supernatural fare, which gets its central thrust from its in-built antagonism between witches and vampires. But viewers used to the explosive style of The Vampire Diaries might find all those whispered conversations in the library a bit tame.

(Starts Thurs., Nov. 15 at 8.30pm; FOX8)
