Here’s what they said:

The We Were Liars cast describe their characters:

Emily Alyn Lind on her character Cadence Sinclair Eastman

“I think Cadence is a girl that has a lot of missing puzzle pieces, and on the outside she wears a shield – just like her mother and her aunts…

“The Sinclairs, in general, have a very pristine facade on 24/7 and I think that in this series, we get to explore a girl finding out who she is in extreme circumstances.”

Shubham Maheshwari on Gat Patil

“To me, Gat’s this intelligent, ambitious, observant person who isn’t actually part of the Sinclair family. But he [has been coming] to the island every summer since he was eight, and just fell in love with the ‘Liars’ and loves to spend his summers there.

“But he also can’t help but feel out of place, like he doesn’t belong, because there’s clearly this difference in class and wealth. And because he’s so observant, he can’t help but feel that some of the Sinclair family members [are trying] to make him feel like he doesn’t belong.

“He struggles with that because he’s in love with Cadence, who’s the granddaughter of Harrison Claire, who kind of owns the island. So in the story, we kind of see him dealing with that, I guess.”

Joseph Zada and Esther McGregor on their characters, Johnny Sinclair Dennis and Mirren Sinclair Sheffield

Esther: “They’re a fun bunch. Fun duo.”

Joseph: “Yeah, dynamic duo.”

Esther: “Dynamic Duo, for sure!”

Joseph: “Energy and light and vibrations.”

Mamie Gummer on Carrie Sinclair

“Carrie is the eldest of the three Sinclair daughters. She’s a little bit cut from a different cloth than the other two; I think she’s a bit more gauzy or porous or something… I think that the rest of the family is a clean cut cotton.

“She feels a lot, and that’s not always convenient, and so she struggles with that.

And Johnny is the love of her life, her son, and she’d do anything to protect him. And the rest, I can’t really say.”

Caitlin FitzGerald on Penny Sinclair

“Penny Sinclair is the middle child, maybe, quintessentially. So, she’s hungry for attention, I think. Desperate to please.

“But [she] also really struggles with revealing any vulnerability or letting herself be intimate with people; open her heart. She’ll meet any kind of emotion with sarcasm, I would say.”

Candice King on Bess Sinclair

“I play Bess Sinclair, and she likes to think of herself as very much the youngest Sinclair sister.

“She is mother to Mirren and Bonnie and Liberty… [But] the most important thing to her is how her father sees her and how her mother also sees her.

“If they think she’s doing a good job, she will put that above whether or not it services her own needs or not.”
