In troubling times, we’re known to look for a bit of nostalgia to keep us company, whether that be in a lockdown period or after a stressful work day.
Just this week, we’ve seen COVID-19 case numbers balloon across Australia, and sadly, read the news that beloved actor Bob Saget has passed away at just 65.
It’s enough to want to make you curl up on the couch and engage in the frivolous life stories of some 20-somethings trying to make it New York City. And no, not the Friends crew, who had their moment in 2021.
We’re talking about How I Met Your Mother.
The beloved show, which held a place in our hearts for nine seasons, is a must-watch when it comes to nostalgia.
Following the narration of ‘Future Ted’, whose voice was provided by Bob Saget, we hear him tell his kids the story of how he met their mother, with a load of irrelevant detail that makes for great watching.
Beginning with Ted’s days as a 20-something architect living in New York with his best friends Marshall and Lily, the audience soon meets the cast of characters that shaped his life.
We’re introduced to the likes of Robyn (a hot contender for the mother, until the very end of the pilot episode, where she is introduced as Aunt Robyn), and serial womaniser Barney, one of Neil Patrick Harris’s most famous roles.
We also meet his long list of almost-Mothers: Victoria, Stella, Zoe, Naomi, etc. and see a bunch of fun cameos from the likes of Britney Spears, Heidi Klum, and Enrique Iglesias.
While Friends makes us think fondly of the 1990s, there’s something very distinctly mid-2000s about How I Met Your Mother that will make you long for a time filled with flip phones and dating that took place outside of the internet.
And if you find the suspense too much to bear (it is a very long series!), season nine is – in our opinion – among the best of the show, where we finally get to know Ted’s wife, Tracey.
The show is so well-loved that it’s currently in the process of being somewhat rebooted, with How I Met Your Father expected to drop on American streaming platform Hulu later this month.
The 10-episode series stars Hilary Duff and Chris Lowell in the main cast, with Kim Cattrall taking on a role equivalent to Saget’s – an older version of Hilary’s character, Sophie.
Executive producers of HIMYM, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, are attached to the project, and the pilot episode is being directed by Pam Fryman, who directed 196 episodes of the original series.
