For those of us who love a bouncy blowout on the daily, winter serves as a great break from the exhausting heat of summer hair styling and the delicious feeling of sweat sticking your hair to your neck the minute the weather gets warm.
While a nice southerly chill may give us a chance to rock our locks on the daily, the sudden cold snap, humidity, and rain can also wreak havoc on our typically glossy strands, leaving us feeling dry and lacklustre. Definitely not a vibe.
After months of hair masques and at-home treatments, WHO sat down with celebrity hairstylist and ColorWow ambassador Marie Uva to get the expert scoop on how to keep your hair looking frizz-free and fabulous all year round.
When it comes to the world of hair, Marie knows a thing or two about the daily cool-girl style, having worked with both Dua Lipa and Gigi Hadid.
With bold colours, such as Dua’s iconic cherry red locks, becoming one of the biggest hair trends for winter, many of us have been diving head-first into the world of vibrant hair.
To maintain your superstar-inspired colour, Marie shares that nailing your winter haircare routine starts in the shower.
“I think the main thing to start with is a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner, such as the ColorWow Colour Security Shampoo and Conditioner, which are amazing for preserving your colour, and that’s the fundamental base.”
Outside the world of cowboy copper, it’s no secret that Matilda Djerf-esque bouncy blowouts are still the it-style of this year. Whether your hair is thick and full of body or fine and flat, Marie’s top tip for salon hair at home is a generous dose of her favourite hair mousse – ColorWow’s Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer.
“The great thing about the Xtra Large volume foam is that it’s a heat protectant, but it’s also going to give you the volume you want. The whole range is a heat protectant, so that takes the guesswork out of it all.”
If you’ve got your styling game nailed but still feel like your hair is lacking its usual lustre, Marie recommends treating your tresses to a leave-in is the best way to go.
‘Depending on what type of hair you’ve got, you can use different types of the ColorWow Dream Cocktail,” she told WHO.
For those with thick hair, a humidity-fighting duo of ColorWow’s cult-favourite Supernatural Dream Coat and the Coconut Dream Cocktail are a match made in hydration heaven. If your hair isn’t too frizzy but still needs some TLC, Marie recommends a few pumps of the Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer for volume without the stickiness.
While the winter humidity may see us reaching more for our favourite hot tools, Marie suggests that everyone, especially those with vibrant hair, amp up their heat protectant.
“Any UV damage or heat/blow drying your hair is all going to assist with making your colour fade, so if you’re using something that is going to be a heat protectant following on from your shampoo and conditioner, that’s going to be great!”
Despite your routine scoring a gold star for colour protection, all hair colour does eventually fade but no matter how many YouTube hair tutorials you’ve watched, Marie advises against using at-home colour shampoos.
“They can go really wrong really easily. They’re hard because they’re not the same colour as your hair, so maintaining your pre-existing colour by using a shampoo and condition that will preserve it is better than trying to put colour back in. Leave that to your stylist.”
