Another day, another viral TikTok theory. Case in point: the ‘pearl earring theory’.
Haven’t heard of it? Here’s everything you need to know…
What is the pearl earring theory?
The pearl earring theory originated on TikTok.
And the premise of the theory is that men apparently think women who wear pearl earrings are high-maintenance and intimidating, and therefore don’t want to date them.
One TikTok user claimed men think a pearl earring-clad woman is “too expensive to approach” – so, essentially, if you wear pearl earrings, you’re single and will stay single.

This theory is doing serious numbers on TikTok now and many have shared anecdotal ‘evidence’.
For instance, one TikTok user commented, “I have been wearing pearl earrings since high school (11yrs old) and now I’m 27, always had a failed relationship.”
Another said: “Wait, I just wore pearls for 2 (single) years.”
Of course, the pearl earring theory is not backed by science in any way, shape or form.
And it honestly just sounds like another way to judge women – which is obviously not cool and frankly tiring; it’s 2025 people. Let women wear what they want (like pearl earrings)!

What does the pearl earring symbolize?
Traditionally, pearls have symbolised purity, elegance and class.
They’re often associated with grandmothers, Audrey Hepburn, or Kate Middleton – you know, women who have a kind of timeless beauty and always look perfectly put-together.
