New York’s hippest hotels

These unique urban digs are more than just places for travellers to rest their weary heads.

The Ludlow

LOCATED in the heart of city’s gritty-luxe Lower East Side neighbourhood, this 20-storey hotel is ideal for those who want a more authentic, immersive New York experience rather than staying in a larger, chain hotel.

A fusion of luxury and considered design with artisan quirks, the property is the brainchild of hoteliers Sean MacPherson, Ira Drukier and Richard Born, behind the Jane and the Bowery.

Occupying a red brick building that was abandoned by its original developers after the financial crash, the hotel offers 175 rooms with 11 configurations.

The Ludlow is modern and industrial but with a warm, personal feel with furniture and artisan touches – think Moroccan pendant lamps and handmade silk rugs – handpicked by MacPherson.

The Ludlow’s restaurant, Dirty French, operates from breakfast until late and its a hip destination in itself, while the Lobby Bar, cosy with a gas fireplace, is a delightful place for a tipple and some people watching.

The piece de resistance, though, is the Ludlow Penthouse, with wraparound windows and an 1100-foot terrace and Skybox Loft with breathtaking views of the city.
