That’s possible with a secret hack that bargain shoppers are sharing online, reports New Idea Food. A little-known Woolworths rule states that if that hot chickens have been on display for more than four hours, the store is meant to offer you a discount, which is usually around 30 per cent.

Just look for the time stamp marked on cooked chickens, do the math and approach a staff member about the discount policy.

Fans of the wildly popular Markdown Addicts Australia Facebook page have been sharing stories of taking advantage of the little-known policy.

Said one follower: ‘I had $2 taken off mine a while back only because I asked. Added another: ‘I got two BBQ chickens for $1.80 each tonight!’

Revealed a third: ‘I got a roast half price today cause it was cooked at 1.35pm and it was about 5pm when I got it.’

Said one follower: ‘My local WW told me last week HO [head office] had reduced the time to 4 hrs from 6 hrs that they had to be displayed BEFORE being marked down max 30%.’

Added another: ‘I had no idea about this rule! I didn’t know Woolworths do that!’

Woolworths confirmed in a statement that the policy does exist, but stressed that the scale of markdowns are at the discretion of staff on duty.

‘Like any food retailer, we work hard to minimise our stock loss with better processes in our stores,’ said a rep.

‘This is not only the right thing to do, but also good business practice.

‘To help manage stock levels and reduce food waste, our store managers can choose to mark down roast chickens that have been on display for up to four hours.

‘We work hard to stock the right volume of products to meet customer demand, while also reducing the potential for waste.’
