Is the Mean Girls movie a musical?
Many fans felt it was unnecessary to remake the original movie - but they clearly didn't realise the new film is not a remake, it's actually a film adaption of the Mean Girls Musical which opened on Broadway in April 2018.
Tina adapted the original film into the hit musical, and was heavily involved in bringing it back to the screen.
"We really started by going back to the first movie to remind ourselves why it was such a big hit and why the different relationships between the characters worked," she says.
"That’s when you realise that Mean Girls is about grievances and the mistakes we all make when we’re that age, and maybe this age too! Bringing the story forward, it was really about working out which of those elements from the film and from the Broadway show to keep, and what to change to keep it feeling new, fun, but also meaningful and surprising."
